Tilghman Island is about 3 miles long and is separated from the mainland by Knapps Narrows. A drawbridge connects the two and is easily accessible. Tilghman is about 11 miles west of St. Michaels, so it is still within an easy day trip reach for the more touristy aspects of MD's Eastern Shore, but for those looking for that true "away from it all" feeling in an authentic, unspoiled environment, look no further than Tilghman Island. Known for seafood, hospitality and boating and fishing, the island is also home to the only commercial sailing fleet in North America, the Chesapeake Bay Skipjacks. Once over a hundred in number, the nine remaining Skipjacks are moored on Tilghman Island in Dogwood Harbor.
